Description

Launched in 1957 the 'Nuova' (new) Fiat 500 was the company's successor to the 500 Topolino and as with other European manufacturers like Volkswagens Beetle and the BMC Mini, the 500 opened up a new world of cheap and practical motoring for style loving Italians. With 2 doors, a genuine 4 seater, fold back soft top and a 479cc (500cc nominal) 2 cylinder rear engine (hence the car's name) the 500 proved to be hugely successful and is considered one of the first purpose designed city cars.

During the course of production the 500 saw a small number of styling and mechanical changes and from 1968-72; the 500L 'Lusso' ran along side the lower specification 500F. In Lusso trim the 500L can be identified by the exterior styling having chrome plastic trims covering the roof drip rails, a redesign of the hubcaps, different bumpers and different badges. Continuing with the 'luxury' theme the interior of the 500L differed by have new dash design , 2 spoke black steering wheel, the door cars featured the same pleated leatherette upholstery as used on the seats, a number of useful storage bins and the floor was now covered in carpet instead of rubber mats.

By 1975 the Fiat 500, now 18yrs old in design, was due for replacement. The new 126 model with its more angular styling ultimately lacked the charm of the 500 and it wasn't until 2007 when Fiat introduced the 4th generation of the 500 model, that the company had truly created a spiritual successor to car affectionately know as 'il Bambino'.

Absolute Classic Cars are delighted to offer this fantastic Fiat 500L / Lusso. Originally registered in Rome on the 12th August 1970 we understand the car was imported into the UK around 2010 by a member of the UK Fiat 500 Club and remained in his collection until 2016. Finished in her stunning Giallo Positano the body of this 500 is one of the best we've ever seen, the paint work has a wonderful deep shine, the chrome is great and with her Italian 'il Trecolore' (Italian flag) stripes and rear picnic / luggage rack this Fiat 500 really stands out from the crowd, a one off. What's really important and often overlooked is that underside is also in top class condition, we've seen a large number of recently restored Italian imports hiding horror stories of rotten floor pans and so should a prospective buyer wish, we're more than happy to offer access to ramp so that you can see the underside is a nice as the top.

Mechanically the car 500 is in first class order. The 499cc two cylinder engine starts readily needing only a small amount of choke on the quirky choke / start levers and once on the move, its smiles all the way as you simply can't help but fall in love whilst driving with the soft top folded back and the engine singing behind you. Since coming into our portfolio we've carried out a thorough inspection and as such we've since replaced all the steering joints, fitted a pair of fully refurbish stub axles and rebuilt the front brakes with new pistons, brake shoes and return springs and with a recent service the 500 is ready to be enjoyed for miles of trouble free motoring.

For such a diminutive car, even when parked next to our modern 500C, the 500L offers a surprising amount of interior space and with an indicated 29738km, the interior remains in fantastic condition. The seats, carpets and door cards are unmarked and all correct to the Lusso model and the only improvement we've made is to fit a top quality set of mats from Ricambo International and a new dashboard knee pad kit.

With a passion for the modern 500 (see our logo'd Abarth) we're delighted that we've finally found a classic 500 that's worthy of joining our other hand-picked classics. Our delightful Fiat 500L will be sold with 12months MOT, comes with recent history, a copy of her original registration documents, rear chrome picnic rack and with her gleaming Positano paint work, wonderful interior and in great mechanical condition our Lusso is now looking for a loving new owner to enjoy her.

"I write these words with a large childish smile still beaming across my face after driving through the Kent countryside, roof down, summers warmth on my face as ‘il Polita’ my beautiful '82 Fiat Spider 2000. This is now June but the story starts in 2018 February at the London Classic Car Show

Glass of fizz in hand with Paul; very good friend of mine. Gazing at auto-erotica, he spots the 82’ Fiat spider 2000 on the stand of ‘Absolute Classic Cars’, with the team greeting us too look closer. A truly stunning example and honestly priced. The conversation flitters between us, the cars of the show, and the possible purhcase of the Spider!

Days later, I call to make a further enquiry to purchase the Fiat Spider. Excitement in my voice is then inadvertently quelled as I find out that the early bird has truly got the worm. Paul has got in before me and struck the deal! All's fair in love afterall. . .

After carrying out a detailed service and additional works the call comes to collect the Spider and on a damp cold March morning we travel up to Lincoln, where we're kindly picked up at the station. Moments later, after a warming coffee, everybody’s happy! The sale's completed and Paul’s in the 'new owners' hot seat of the Spider raring to go. Myself? Navigators seat, perhaps with the slightest of sighs. 150 miles later, we’re home but the drive South has encouraged me to make the call for Absolute Classic Cars to commence the search for another model. This time, most definitely with my name on it!

Over the next month myself and the ACC team discuss cars in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, with the Mark and Carl casting their ever professional ‘laser pin point’ eye over several models. Each time highlighting why that may not be the example for me. Rest assured these guys know their onions and you’re in very safe hands; candid and sincere.

Just when I was beginning to feel the summer would pass without a ‘Spider’ for my own Italian passions, I get a phone call from my friend Paul. Whether it was a hint of guilt or just that he had run out of space for his car collection? .....“Would you like to buy the Spider from me”....I think they were his words, as I interrupted with a ‘yes definitely’ before the sentence was cast from his lips!

I inform ACC to call off the search, the Spider has fund its true home! – ‘Perhaps it was just meant to be‘  he wryly says.

From that champagne fuelled car show, meeting Carl and Mark, the roundabout route of having my perfect car in the garage & now chasing summer horizons. I can honestly say it’s been a pleasure both meeting and finally getting ‘the car’ through the Absolute Classic Cars.

As they say in Italy – ‘Le Dolce Vita’ "
