Originally shown at the 1961 Earls Court Motor Show, the Jaguar Mk X (Mark Ten) was every inch the companys executive saloon and was initially designed to target the US market with levels of luxury normally reserved for the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls Royce. With its ‘unitary construction’, the Mk X became the daily drive of ‘Mr Jaguar’ himself, Sir William Lyons with features including the now distinctive veined grill surrounded by four headlights (a styling cue still found today), acres of polished wood, picnic tables and leather detailing.
Powered by the 3.8 litre, six cylinder engine, the Mk X remained in production until 1970. A small number of design changes occurred during the cars life, notably the introduction of Jaguars range topping 4.2 litre XK engine in 1964, coinciding with the introduction of the 4.2 litre E-type and a name change to the 420G in 1966 where the car also saw a small number of revised styling cues. In total approximately 18,000 Mk X / 420G models where produced and of these only 5672 4.2 litre Mk X models where manufactured.
This particular Mark X was sold through ex Jaguar Works S. H. ‘Sammy’ Newsome & Co dealership and was registered on the 1st July 1966 to G. Hunt and Sons Ltd as shown on her original buff logbook. This spectacular “matching numbers” 4.2 litre model, has only had 3 former keepers in the last 51years and comes with a most comprehensive history file, with the previous and fastidious keeper owning the car for some 20yrs.
Finished in her factory ordered Golden Sand paint, the Mk X was entrusted to the respected Jaguar specialist, P & K Thornton Restorations in 1997 for what would turn out to be a 3 year restoration, with the then owner stipulating that every component should either be restored or replaced. The end result is by far the finest Mk X Jaguar we have ever seen with beautiful shut lines, a wonderful depth to her metallic paint, window / door rubbers in ‘as new’ condition and chrome-work which simply sparkles.
Opening the door to the Jaguar reveals the wonderful smell of top quality leather and sliding behind the wheel of this big cat, it is easy to imagine driving back in the ’60’s in this most opulent of saloons. The whole interior simply oozes class and quality, so refined that we would say it matches any Rolls Royce or Bentley of the day and indeed would rival many a modern luxury car. The leather remains in first class order as do the deep pile red carpets, but of all aspects of the interior it is the level of quality of the door capping, picnic tables and chrome vanity mirrors which completely wowed us, the quality of the P & K Thornton Restoration is without compare.
With ignition engage, fuel pumps primed and the ‘STARTER’ button depressed, the 4.2 litre straight six engine fires readily and settles into a silky smooth idle, the exhaust note from the twin stainless steel system being muted for luxury motoring. Select ‘Drive’ on the Borg Warner Type 8 automatic gearbox and the Mk X wafts her passengers along in absolute luxury.
Since her restoration the Mk X has completed less than 7500 miles and has been owned for the last 9yrs by the owner of a local Grade 1 Historic House & Gardens and is offered for sale as the owner has little time to enjoy this classic Jaguar. The Mk X comes with one of the most comprehensive history folders we’ve ever seen, restoration bills in excess of £80,000, her original logbook / owners handbook, service chart, various items of automobilia, an MOT until Apr 2018 and in this condition represents a fantastic opportunity to own one of the UKs best examples of this model at a fraction of the cost of a comparable Mk 2 Jaguar.

It’s been a while now, but I'd just like to say "thanks" for selling me one of the best Triumph GT6s . I'm having so much fun with her, and have named her "Olive" . I am slowly buying new parts as others wear, but have to say the finish on the paint work is awesome. I took her to a new classic car garage opening the other week and have to say she stood her ground very well. Owning a classic is so much fun, I feel very privileged.
