Tracing its lineage back to the original 300 SL Roadster of 1957, the Mercedes-Benz R230 was the fifth generation of the SL model range, with production commencing at the Bremen plant, Germany, in October 2001 and was designed by Steve Mattin, who later became involved in the Maclaren SLR development. The R230 Mercedes SL is a sinuous, sensuous roadster with dramatic styling and came with an eye watering price tag too, but on stepping into the SL any driver / passenger would understand why these cars were so expensive when new as Mercedes had packed them with every bit of automotive technology, the pièce de résistance being the 'origami style' folding steel sunroof which fully retracts to offer open-air convertible cruising or raises just 18 seconds later to offer the whisper quiet luxury of a GT Coupe.
Delivered on the 19th March 2004 this sensational Mercedes-Benz SL500 comes complete with dealer book-packs, including the original Fahrzeugdaten Karte (data card) which specifies the car was ordered with the following options:

A fantastically specified car, this SL500 has formed part of a private collection, having previously been owned by another family member and has been impeccable maintained, stored in a climate-controlled garage, cossetted under a fully tailored car cover (included in the sale) and has only been used on high-days and holidays and as such is in stunning condition. With the additional options specified, the price tag on this super sleek cabriolet would have been in excess of £80k and with such a figure the expectation is that such a car would be maintained to the highest standard too, this SL 500 is no exception. There are 8 service stamps indicated; 7810 miles, 11841 miles, 17210 miles, 21667 miles, 27090 miles, 33335 miles, 35187 miles, 36337 miles and all being a mixture of Mercedes-Benz main dealer and Independent Mercedes specialist, with invoices accompanying the associate work . The car now shows 36500 miles, is HPi clear and the mileage is substantiated with DVLA print-out of previous MOT history and she will come with 12 months MOT prior to delivery.
A tour around this SL will leave anyone speechless, the condition of the paintwork and interior is remarkable, she belies the fact that she is a 15 year old car, a real testament to being properly cared for. The 5.0 litre V8 fires instantly, no intrusive hammer-thumping bass as associated with the AMG models, more a refined rumble as the motor gentle warms; but that's not to say this 300+ bhp Mercedes is a slow as once up to temperature and with the AMG 7G-Tronic gearbox and Active Body Control (suspension) set in 'SPORT' and with the multi-adjustable seats set 'just so' and you'll soon find that this SL can either be enjoyed as a boulevard cruiser or driven in a more 'spirited' style with the large capacity V8 pushing you harder into your seats and offering virtually flat cornering.
As a Grand Tourer, with either the optioned Panoramic Vario-roof up or as a super-sleek convertible this Mercedes-Benz SL500 is just a wonderful example, correct in every way and ready to offer its new owner quality, style, grace and pace at a fraction of her 'as new' price.

After searching for many months for my ideal Jaguar E-type I came across what appeared to be a lovely example for sale by Absolute Classic Cars. I had been determined at the outset of my search that I would find a car that had been completely restored to a very high standard, yet restored in a sympathetic way where it would still be as original as possible, particularly with regards to original engine, chassis and bodywork numbers being present. I investigated many examples of the marque over some months, spreading my net far and wide, including seeing some excellent examples dotted around Europe.
What caught me eye with Absolute’s example was the stunning photography and superb narrative history of the car that was presented in the sale details. After many previous (at times torturous) interchanges with other vendors trying to get to the critical information of a vehicle, doing so with Mark was an absolute breeze. With specific questions answered rapidly and accurately, I grew confident that here was a company that was going the extra mile to not only market superb examples of cars, but that also had a deep love and knowledge of the subject. Mark opened the premises especially for me on a Sunday afternoon for a viewing, and after 24 hours of deliberation I was delighted to proceed. Not only did Mark make the transaction painless, he also personally delivered the car over a long distance to me in a covered trailer on a date that suited, in a fabulous example of exemplary service. If I’m ever lucky enough to be in a position again to make a similar purchase, I would certainly contact Mark again - he is an industry gentleman.
