Introduced in 1965 as replacement for the outgoing Porsche 356 model, the Porsche 912 was developed to meet the needs of buyers looking for a stylish sports coupe who couldn't stretch to the more expensive and newly introduced, six cylinder powered, Porsche 911. With its detuned, 1600cc flat four variant, of the 356SC engine, its excellent weight distribution, great handling, 911 styling and superior economy the Porsche 912 proved an instant success and in the first few years of production it outsold the 911 considerably.
For the 1967 model year Porsche also introduced the 'Targa' for both the 911 & 912 models, complete with removable roof panel and a heavy plastic transparent rear window which was removable on a zip (known by Porsche aficionados as the 'soft window Targa'), with this being developed in further in 1968 with the introduction of the Targa 'Version II' which now featured a large wrap-around rear glass screen and effectively made the car a full coupe with a removable roof. Of the 32000 examples built only 2500 where Targas and by the end of 1969 Porsche had already started production of the new 914 and so production of the Porsche 912 came to an end.
This stunning matching numbers example, as confirmed by a Porsche COA, was built in Stuttgart in 1969. She was ordered in 'Special Order Paint', Olive, code 6835L as noted on the Porsche COA and original paint tag found inside the N/S door / base of the A-pillar. Further options included the rarer 5 speed manual transmission (902/06), front / rear bumper guards and as can be seen in the photographs she also has 6x15 Fuchs alloys wheels, front fog lamps and a period Blaupunkt radio.
A review of her wonderful history file leads us to believe that between 1969 and 1998 the car lived in California and at some time she received a colour change to metallic red as this is noted on the UK import documentation from when the car was brought into the UK by a Porsche specialist in '98. In 2009 the car was taken off the road and a documented bare metal respray was carried out and the car was rightfully returned to her factory original Olive. During this time all the rubber seals were renewed, chromework was either replaced or re-plated and the exhaust replaced with a stainless steel M&K free flow system with twin outlet. Since then the 912 has been impeccably maintained and she has travelled less than 8000 miles since and her history file contains servicing / maintenance parts records from Porsche UK, independent Porsche parts suppliers and work carried out at respected Porsche specialists.
On walking around this LWB 912 Targa the car remains in fantastic condition, panel gaps are superb, the paint has a great lustre, the chrome work & polished Fuchs alloys are all excellent as is the Targa top (2x keys supplied), which when folded stores neatly in the carpeted boot compartment. The car is fitted with twin Weber IDF carburettors, she has recently had her brakes / suspension rebuilt and is fitted with new tires and on the open road the car performs really well. Her steering remains light and with a really good feel, braking ability is excellent and the car accelerates and drives very well with plenty of power in all gears as of course it is considerably lighter than a 911 of a similar vintage. We have improved the car further by having the seats re-trimmed in the correct Porsche basket weave material for the front seats, correct plain vinyl for the rear seats and new carpets. Its great to see the car retains an original Blaupunkt radio, which has also been subtly upgrade to now allow for iPhone / Android phone connectivity for music and with her great history file, UK paperwork / MOT's all the way back to 1998, US history continuing back to 1980 and in such wonderful condition, this Porsche 912 is one of the finest examples we've seen and ready to be enjoyed by her new owner.

"I write these words with a large childish smile still beaming across my face after driving through the Kent countryside, roof down, summers warmth on my face as ‘il Polita’ my beautiful '82 Fiat Spider 2000. This is now June but the story starts in 2018 February at the London Classic Car Show
Glass of fizz in hand with Paul; very good friend of mine. Gazing at auto-erotica, he spots the 82’ Fiat spider 2000 on the stand of ‘Absolute Classic Cars’, with the team greeting us too look closer. A truly stunning example and honestly priced. The conversation flitters between us, the cars of the show, and the possible purhcase of the Spider!
Days later, I call to make a further enquiry to purchase the Fiat Spider. Excitement in my voice is then inadvertently quelled as I find out that the early bird has truly got the worm. Paul has got in before me and struck the deal! All's fair in love afterall. . .
After carrying out a detailed service and additional works the call comes to collect the Spider and on a damp cold March morning we travel up to Lincoln, where we're kindly picked up at the station. Moments later, after a warming coffee, everybody’s happy! The sale's completed and Paul’s in the 'new owners' hot seat of the Spider raring to go. Myself? Navigators seat, perhaps with the slightest of sighs. 150 miles later, we’re home but the drive South has encouraged me to make the call for Absolute Classic Cars to commence the search for another model. This time, most definitely with my name on it!
Over the next month myself and the ACC team discuss cars in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, with the Mark and Carl casting their ever professional ‘laser pin point’ eye over several models. Each time highlighting why that may not be the example for me. Rest assured these guys know their onions and you’re in very safe hands; candid and sincere.
Just when I was beginning to feel the summer would pass without a ‘Spider’ for my own Italian passions, I get a phone call from my friend Paul. Whether it was a hint of guilt or just that he had run out of space for his car collection? .....“Would you like to buy the Spider from me”....I think they were his words, as I interrupted with a ‘yes definitely’ before the sentence was cast from his lips!
I inform ACC to call off the search, the Spider has fund its true home! – ‘Perhaps it was just meant to be‘ he wryly says.
From that champagne fuelled car show, meeting Carl and Mark, the roundabout route of having my perfect car in the garage & now chasing summer horizons. I can honestly say it’s been a pleasure both meeting and finally getting ‘the car’ through the Absolute Classic Cars.
