Introduced as the 'M' divisions (BMW Motorsport department) development of the Z3 Roadster, the Z3M Roadster was manufactured between 1997 and 2002 and was developed under the leadership of engineer Burkhard Göschel, with the exterior design enhanced from the original Z3 created by Joji Nagashima. Power came from the M division 3.2 litre (S50 engine in Europe from '97-01 and then the S54 engine for '01-02) which produced circa 320bhp and when mated to a 5 speed ZF gearbox gave the car a sub 5.5 second 0-60mph time and a top speed limited to 155mph.
Compared to the standard Z3, M models featured a limited slip differential, a wider rear track and larger brakes (shared with the E36 M3 coupe / saloon). Z3M models have more aerodynamic wing-mirrors, redesigned front and rear bumpers, revised side gills, staggered 17-inch wheels, quad exhausts, additional instrumentation, sport seats, extended leather to the centre console and 'M' Power gauges.
Originally supplied by BMW Coombs of Guildford on the 23rd April 1998 this Z3M Roadster is a real rarity and is 1 of only 918 RHD models fitted with the 3.2 litre 24 valve twin-cam S50 engine, producing 316 bhp. "After recently selling my Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadster I found myself spending hours searching for a suitable replacement. With so many years being the owner of this stylish ‘Cat’ the search went on day and night, often with a glass of Scotlands finest whiskey in hand! I began working through my ‘wish list’ and couldn’t believe my luck when I stumbled across the Absolute Classic Cars website. A Volvo 1800S was clearly on my radar and Marks privately owned classic was something unreal, the car looked truly stunning.
I instantly called Mark (who speaks great German) and told him I would be on the next available plane. At 2am I booked the flight, organised a rental car and shortly afterwards had boarded a flight to the UK and finally made it to Marks house with enough light left in an otherwise typical grey winters day. Mark opened his garage and rolled out his classic, still wearing its cover, my heart in overdrive and head spinning! Mark removed the cover and there in front me…..every word Mark had used far exceeded my expectations, the exterior colour complimented the shape of the car perfectly, it simply could not be surpassed, the interior was the icing on the cake and the car was in absolutely fantastic order…I needed to buy this car as much as I needed to breath!
The personal touch, the thought of the smallest details that went into restoring this car from a barn-find car to an absolute classic winner just shows the amount of expertise and knowledge about design and how things work to elevate a good car into something very special.
If you are looking for the personal touch paired with knowledge about historic cars, then Absolute Classic Cars is the only way to go."
