In March 1984 the MkII Golf made its UK debut, with the GTI available from day one. Its quad headlight grill with red trim, deep front spoiler and obligatory 'GTI' badging marking it out as the must have hot hatch of the '80s! Specification for the GTI remained relatively unchanged until the 1987 model year, aside from some wheel and minor exterior / interior trim changes. In August 1986 the 139bhp 16v engine (KR code) joined the 112bhp 8v GTi and it was only in August of 1987 the MkII underwent its first major facelift, with the quarter lights removed from the front door glass and the mirrors moved further forward along the doors. The grille was also changed slightly and the fuel injection system was updated, with the mechanical K-Jet system being replaced with the fully-electronic Digifant system on the 8v GTi models. In late 1989 the MkII received its final revision, with exterior changes culminating with the 'Big Bumper' models and the model now remaining unchanged until the end of production in 1991
Immaculately presented, March '89 Volkswagen Golf GTI was originally sold through the Hillingdon Volkswagen dealership and was ordered with the following specification:
- 1.8 Litre Digifant Engine (PB engine code) with 5 Speed Manual.
- Finished in Tornado Red (code: LY3D).
- Grey / Red stripe Interior (code: HZ).
- 14" Volkswagen Teardrop alloys.
- Steel sliding sunroof.
- Central locking.
- Remote side mirror adjustment.
- Folding rear seat.
- Rear seat belts.
- VAG approved Piranha Alarm system.
- Blaupunkt London SQM 37 Radio / Cassette.
- Factory over mats.
Having owned a number of MkII Golfs the opportunity to find original, unmolested, low mileage examples rarely occurs these days, however having only had 3 keepers, the last for 26 years this example is as close to 'factory fresh' as we've seen. From a review of the history file, all invoices from March '90 it appears the car was original registered to a Mr Edwards, Hillingdon, passing to his wife and then to the current keeper, Mrs Walter, again from Hillingdon in Aug '91 and staying in her ownership for the next 26 years. Showing just 68k miles this fantastic GTI has lead a cossetted life (garaged every night) with most of the mileage being driven in the early years and amazingly over the last 20 years, the car has averaged less than 500 miles per year!
Finished in her stunning Tornado Red this early '89 example is one of the last small bumper / deep front spoiler models prior to the change to the 'Big Bumper' models. The panels are free from any dents, with panel gaps consistent with Volkswagens high build quality standards and the paint work has the most sensational shine, free from any fade. All the rubbers, side trims, wheel arch plastics and the bumpers have resisted any bleaching too, a remarkable example in every way and with her fully refurbished 14" Teardrop alloys, with diamond cut detail, this GTI could easily be mistaken for a car a 10th of its age and with the trademark twin-tailpipe exhaust and GTI badging this car just looks right!
Opening the door and the quality continues. The seats, grey / red stripe are in perfect condition. The seat bolsters remain firm and supportive with no nasty marks, tears or creases! The rest of the interior also remains in excellent condition; everything in factory fresh condition and detailed correctly, the 'Golf ball' gear knob, the dash instrumentation functions correctly including the MFA, the headlining is perfect as is the rear parcel shelf (NO HOLES), she comes with a set of full set of Votex (Volkswagen option) over-mats, original Blaupunkt London SQM 37 stereo and on inspecting the boot area, its great to note that not only is the tool kit present, but that the all important Volkswagen 'build' sticker is present on the rear panel.
The 1.8 litre, 8 valve engine fires without hesitation and settles into a smooth idle. Since her arrival at Absolute Classic Cars we've carried out a full service, fitted a new cambelt, water-pump, coolant change and fitted a new OE exhaust system and out on the open road the GTI performs exactly as expected with the 1.8 litre 8 valve engine providing smooth power delivery through the crisp 5 speed gearbox, she's just a joy to drive, hugely rewarding and surprisingly economically....always a bonus with classic car ownership!
A truly cherished example this Volkswagen Golf GTI comes with one of the best history files we've seen. The lever arch folder contains invoices in excess of £9500, she's also had a new clutch in the last 500 miles and records confirm that she's been serviced 15 times, confirmation that this GTI has been fastidiously maintained. Without exception one of the finest Volkswagen MkII Golf GTI's we've come across and undoubtedly finished in the 'must have' colour, Tornado Red, this GTI ticks all the right boxes, a true classic in every sense, ready to 'Wow' her owner and with decades of enjoyment ahead too!

After months of searching the internet and classic car auctions for the perfect example, I stumbled across a Capri 2.8 Injection for sale at Absolute Classics Cars. I spoke with Mark who was pleasant, helpful and informative. He said that the car was “like the day it came out of the dealership,” and so with some trepidation, I made the journey and found that the car had been described perfectly and truthfully. The guys at Absolute Classic Cars couldn’t have been more helpful, offering me information on train times, places to stay and directions and seeing how beautifully prepared the car was the deal just had to be done. Carl and Mark made the buying experience a real pleasure and I will not hesitate in buying another car from them when time and space allow me to add to the collection.
